How to redact a PDF

  1. 1

    Choose your PDF

Click the box or drop your file onto it. Every page is shown so you can scroll through.

  2. 2

Draw boxes over what to hide

Drag on a page to cover a name, a number, a signature or a face. Click the ✕ on a box to remove it, or use Undo.

  3. 3

    Save PDF

Download the redacted copy. Pages with boxes are saved as pictures, so the text underneath is truly removed.

Questions

Is the text really gone, or just hidden?
Really gone. Pages with black boxes are saved as pictures, so there is no text left under the boxes to copy, search or recover. A plain black rectangle drawn in a PDF viewer does not do this, because the text stays underneath.
Will the PDF get bigger or lose quality?
Only pages with boxes change. They become images at about 144 dpi, which looks sharp on screen and on paper but is heavier than text, and their text can no longer be selected. Other pages stay as they are.
Does it also remove metadata and attachments?
The redacted PDF is built as a new file, so the original’s document properties, bookmarks and attachments are not carried over. For an extra layer, add a password with Protect PDF.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. PurrPDF runs entirely inside your browser. Your file is opened, changed and saved on your own device. There is no server that receives it — you can even turn off your Wi-Fi and it still works.
